Please join the McLean County Bar Association in welcoming Judge J. Brian Goldrick. He will lead the Bar through a discussion on the types of hearings that occur in the life of a Juvenile Abuse/Neglect case. Judge Goldrick was appointed as an associate judge in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit in 2013. Prior to his appointment as an Associate Judge, he was in the McLean County Public Defender's Office from 1992 to 1996 and in private practice from 1996 to 2013. He handled cases in juvenile court while working in the public defender's office and in private practice. While in private practice from 2000 to 2013, he was the contract guardian-ad-litem in McLean County for all abuse/neglect cases.  Since his appointment to the bench, Judge Goldrick’s assignments have included DUI court, mental health, small claims, orders of protection and juvenile delinquency. He is currently the presiding judge of the Juvenile Abuse/Neglect division in McLean County, and hears guardianship cases and adoptions. march 7 - 13

BY
Colin Kolodziej
Dear Members of the McLean County Bar Association,
I am writing this letter to let you know about this week which is “AmeriCorps Week” from March 7 to March 13. During this week, AmeriCorps members spread the word about AmeriCorps programs, members, and alumni as well as the impact that our service has on the country. My name is Colin Kolodziej and I am a full-time fellow with the Illinois JusticeCorps, a program of the Illinois Bar Foundation and AmeriCorps.
Since this August in my capacity as an Illinois JusticeCorps Fellow, I assist self-represented litigants in navigating the civil legal system. As someone interested in public interest law, it is both educational and rewarding for me to serve people in need regardless of their socio-economic status. Across the state, fellows and volunteer members engage in service, increasing access to justice for our community’s most underserved populations. Fellows and members consist mainly of students and recent college graduates such as myself.
I work in the Law Library of the McLean County Law & Justice Center with three other volunteers Erin Norris, David Trevino, and Grace Bruner.  We help many court patrons on a daily basis navigate the civil legal system. We assist in electronically filing of court documents, provide legal information to court patrons, refer people to local court resources, and help court patrons complete court forms. The legal issues that court patrons face are wide and varied. We help survivors of domestic violence prepare and file orders of protection, landlords and tenants navigate the eviction process, patrons file for divorce and other family cases, patrons get help expunging or sealing their criminal record, patrons change their names, patrons file and answer small claims law suits and other legal issues.
I find the work we do to be incredibly gratifying, acting as a helpful bridge between the court and people without lawyers. Often, the people who walk into our small corner of the world are confused, frustrated, or angered by the prospect of going to court. For many, it is their first time, and they fear the uncertainty of engaging the legal system without a lawyer. In the civil legal system, the consequences people can face can be as serious as those in the criminal justice system, from a parent losing custody of their children to paying great financial penalty in a lawsuit. I believe giving people a sense that they are heard and that they will get their day in court is a great contribution to our community.
JusticeCorps is just one program of AmeriCorps that contributes to making our communities better. Currently, there are over 270,000 members and volunteers serving, improving communities across the country as well as 1 million alumni who have served over 1.6 billion hours combined. AmeriCorps members and volunteers serve in non-profits, schools, public agencies, local businesses, and faith-based organizations.
In honor of “AmeriCorps Week”, I ask you to spread the word about not only what Illinois JusticeCorps does to serve the community, but also what the broader mission of AmeriCorps is as well as thank current members and alumni for their service. At AmeriCorps, our motto is “Getting Things Done”, and in that spirit I ask that if you can, consider finding your own ways to give back to our community this week or in the future. Thank you for all that you do for our community.
Sincerely,
Colin Kolodziej - Illinois JusticeCorps Fellow--McLean County - Email: [email protected]
