Overview:
John L. Pratt has been representing clients in central Illinois since 1991. Prior to joining Meyer Capel in 2023, Mr. Pratt was a shareholder in the law firm of Pratt and Pratt, P.C. Mr. Pratt works for closely held companies and their respective owners in a variety of matters including business formations and transactions. He also assists clients with estate planning and estate administration. Mr. Pratt represents clients in commercial, agricultural and residential real estate matters and he represents school systems and other governmental entities.
Mr. Pratt joined his father, John T. Pratt, and his sister, Catherine A. Pratt, in the law firm of Pratt and Pratt, P.C. in 1991. The firm was started by Mr. Pratt's grandfather, Horace Pratt, in 1919. Cathy Pratt retired in 2022 and the firm was closed. Mr. Pratt continues to manage all of the Pratt and Pratt, P.C. files.
Mr. Pratt graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law, Magna Cum Laude, and he is a member of its chapter of The Order of the Coif. Mr. Pratt has an accounting degree with high distinction from the University of Kentucky and was captain of its varsity swim team. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Pratt worked for Deloitte as a Certified Public Accountant.
Mr. Pratt is the president of the McLean County Bar Association and he is on the board of directors of the Illinois Prairie Community Foundation, the Central Illinois Masters Swim Team and the Lake Run Club. Mr. Pratt is a member of the Bloomington Normal Sunrise Rotary Club. He has been president of the Sunrise Rotary Club, the Bloomington Country Club and the McLean County Arts Center and he was a founding member of the Downtown Bloomington Cultural District Board. Mr. Pratt regularly volunteers for Easterseals and the Miller Park Zoological Society.
Mr. Pratt lives in Bloomington with his wife and son. Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with his family, swimming, riding road and mountain bikes, and listening to live music (especially when his son is playing the tuba).
