September 11, 2020
To: The McLean County Bar Association: Once again, I hope this quick update finds you, your family and your staff well. I write this update on September 11th while reflecting on the horrendous events that occurred on the same day in 2001. It is hard to believe that 19 years have passed since that terrible day and we will never forget those lost and injured during those attacks. |
I know that the entire world is tired of all things pandemic and so are we. Regardless, we must persevere and be vigilant to do our part to bring it to an end. We have not made any major changes since my last update. I would encourage everyone to, at a minimum, to observe one of our remote/virtual courtrooms if you haven’t participated in a remote/virtual proceeding. You should contact Trial Court Administrator William Scanlon for instructions. Like anything else, it becomes second nature the more comfortable you get with the technology and procedures just like when we all got our first smartphone.
From a legal standpoint, I would direct your attention to two Illinois Supreme Court Orders entered August 27, 2020 in M.R. 30370. One pertains to Covid-related courthouse procedures. The other pertains to fee waivers and to a change in “date certain” summons in cases under $50,000.00. In McLean County, we were in the process of changing our procedures to comport with this Order, but I was advised today (9/11/20) that the Supreme Court is considering modifying summons-related Order. We expect to know the details within a week, and we will update you when we make our changes.
Should you have any questions or concerns on court operations, please contact Trial Court Administrator William Scanlon at (309) 888-5266.
Stay safe and take care of yourself.
Best regards.
Chief Judge Mark A. Fellheimer

ryan scott victims
MCBA Member Dan Deneen is featured in a new podcast about one of his defendants, a fake priest. Here is the LINK. Select Episode 4 - September 3, 2020
Dan is quoted at length in the fourth segment. He reports that some of you have already heard his story about a court hearing in which the “Lord Reverend and Most Holy Ryan Scott” was asked by Dan about his theology degrees, and after finally admitting he had none, told the judge “Jesus didn’t have any degrees”. Dan reports that the documentary flows well and has some interesting points, and information about other victims of Ryan Scott around the country.

I first became involved with St. Jude when my grandfather asked that instead of Christmas gifts, the family member who drew his name for the exchange make a donation to St. Jude in his name. At this time he was starting his own fight with cancer that he would sadly, eventually succumb to. Since becoming involved, I have learned the true impact of this organization, including the number of children from our community St. Jude has saved. I’m willing to bet you know someone or are related to someone who survived thanks to St. Jude.
