CRIMINAL LAW UPDATE

The ABCs of the New CTAA:
Why Money & Criminal Sentencing Don’t Mix
(and How to Fill Out the Dang Forms)

1 hour of general cle credit [approved]

The McLean County Bar Association cordially invites you to attend a presentation on new Criminal & Traffic Assessment Act (CTAA). This event will be presented by Judge Scott Kording. Effective July 1, 2019, the new Criminal & Traffic Assessment Act (“CTAA”) overhauled the process of levying financial obligations upon defendants who are sentenced under Illinois criminal law. Designed to help simplify imposition of financial obligations and reduce the hardship of such obligations on lower-income defendants, the CTAA also adds new procedures—and many complications!—to the manner in which fines, traditional “court costs,” and other expenses of administering the criminal justice system are handled, including the process of obtaining a judicial waiver of most of the amounts due in many cases. This presentation will be useful for both new and experienced criminal law practitioners, and will address how the new law is impacting McLean County criminal law courtroom practice and what future changes in this area of the law are expected in the next year. The presentation also will address the content of the new financial sentencing orders and how practitioners should complete the forms properly.
