My name is Joe Lewis, and I am a part-time attorney who teaches full time at Bloomington High School. I have been working with Michael Butts and Mary Sellmyer to try and expand the Lawyers in the Classroom program. If you have interest in volunteering any amount of time to speak to students, then please consider filling out an interest form at this LINK. 

Doing so does not commit you to anything; it is simply meant to record your interest. If you provide contact information, then my plan is to reach out to you individually and try to pair you with a teacher whose curriculum aligns with your area(s) of expertise.

​I feel that having a legal background gives you a unique perspective on just about everything we do at the high school, and sharing that perspective in a classroom would be a great way for both you and the students to grow and learn.

Traffic Stops & Motor Vehicles Searches

Evidence of a crime is often found by police during the search of a vehicle that was stopped for a traffic violation. Items found during the search may be illegal contraband, such as drugs or weapons, or evidence of another crime. What starts out as a minor traffic violation can turn into a search of the vehicle to investigate evidence of crimes unrelated to the traffic stop. This CLE program presents an examination of the various legal bases for the police to conduct a motor vehicle search and the possible legal challenges to the search. Attorneys who either defend or prosecute criminal cases involving the possession of contraband will be better able to recognize evidentiary issues related to criminal charges arising out of traffic stops and motor vehicle searches.
