court news
court operations should the pandemic take a turn for the worse locally. Although none of us would ever wish a global pandemic again, one silver lining is that it has made the Judiciary nimble in delivering our services and being able to adjust and pivot in rapid fashion. Several 11th Circuit Judges are leading the efforts state-wide with pandemic related issues and I thank them for their tireless service. While we continue to operate the courts through the pandemic, we also continue to examine how we can incorporate what we have learned during the pandemic into our future court operations to benefit the bar and the litigants from scheduling issues to remote appearances. For example, remote appearances may allow more litigants to hire lawyers if some of the preliminary and status hearings are conducted remotely to cut down on travel time for lawyers and less missed worked for the litigants. The net effect should be more people being able to hire a lawyer and for lawyers to be able to take a higher caseload without having to travel for every hearing. As I have stated before, I thank you for your continued patience, cooperation and understanding during these strange and uncomfortable times. Thank you to Judge Butler for his comprehensive and informative Collections Webinar held on Tuesday, July 21st. I enjoyed it immensely. I look forward to other similar programs in the future. Stay safe. With regards, Chief Judge Mark A. Fellheimer Should you have any questions or concerns on court operations, please contact the Trial Court Administrator, William Scanlon at (309) 888-5266. The Need for Pro Bono & A Virtual Way to Help
[1 hour professional responsibility pending approval]
The 2nd hour offers an opportunity to set up a virtual pro bono link! Please join the McLean County Bar Association in welcoming Jessica Schneider, Managing Attorney, Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI). During this presentation, attendees will learn about the importance of and need for pro bono in providing equal access to justice and the many ways in which they can contribute their time and talent. Attendees will also learn about a virtual pro bono opportunity – Illinois Free Legal Answers – that is also a great “bite-sized” pro bono opportunity. The discussion will detail specific aspects of the Illinois Supreme Court Rules of Professional Conduct relating to pro bono and access to justice. 1. To provide lawyer's with a greater understanding of the need for pro bono legal services, efforts to increase pro bono in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, and recent statewide efforts to expand access to justice. 2. To increase lawyer's understanding of the pro bono landscape in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit and how attendees can help low-income and underrepresented individuals and families, through the use of technology no matter where they work as an attorney. 3. To provide lawyer's with an understanding of the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct that are relevant to pro bono practice generally as well as the virtual pro bono opportunity through Illinois Free Legal Answers. The second hour of the program will provide an opportunity for a hand's on remote pro bono experience through your home computing device. Once you complete the second hour, you will be able to contribute to the legal answers community from the comfort of your own home! Please join us!! Executive Order
