MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTAs things continue to open during this Stage 4 transition, I hope you all are continuing to do well and staying safe. I hope complete normalcy is in sight and the term "COVID" will be used in the past tense. As is the case this time of year, especially during these strange times, we have a slow week for our Association. Looking ahead and with the less than positive reports from other states who opened up sooner than Illinois, I believe that the most prudent thing to do is to conduct the MCBA's Annual meeting, now set for noon on Tuesday, July 14th, via ZOOM, provided that we have a quorum of at least 25 members. We will be opening registration soon so we would ask for everyone who plans to "attend" the ZOOM presentation to register early so we can gauge the numbers to ensure that we have a quorum. I have informed Dan Deneen of the History Committee that we will then move the presentation of resolutions commemorating the passing of Bar members to a later date when we can appropriately honor our colleagues and their loved ones. I held out hope of an in person Annual meeting, but truly believe this is the best approach. For those members whose two-year MCLE reporting period is June 30, 2020, please do not forget to report your compliance to the MCLE Board or request a three-month extension (until September 30, 2020) to earn your MCLE credits, at no cost without a late fee, by submitting an online report of "Not Yet Complied" to the MCLE Board no later than July 31, 2020. If you do not report compliance, "not yet complied" or otherwise secure a valid exemption on or before July 31, 2020, you will still have until September 30, 2020 to earn the credits and report your compliance but you will need to pay a $250.00 late fee. Lastly, continue to peruse our MCBA website on a weekly basis as we continue to provide valuable information and resources for matters impacting our local courthouse and Bar association or throughout our circuit and beyond. The McLean County Bar Association is honored to announce Emily Petri is the 2020 McLean County Bar Association Young Lawyer of the Year. As we cannot all join in person yet, we wanted to announce Emily’s award in the newsletter, and hopefully have a formal ceremony to congratulate her during the December meeting. |
For those of you who don’t know Emily, where have you been? Emily graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law, in 2012. In 2011 Emily was one of the first recipients of the McLean County Community Services Scholarship. In honoring her then, the bar association noted her amazing commitment to her community and pro bono service. She indicated she wanted to work in public interest in McLean County. Emily has surpassed the scholarship committee’s wildest expectations with her continued commitment to the community.
Emily is a Staff Attorney at Prairie State Legal Services, a job she’s held since graduating from law school 8 years ago. There she primarily represents victims of Domestic Violence in obtaining Orders of Protection. In 2019, she volunteered to lead Prairie State’s new Fair Housing Project grant where she works to address local housing discrimination. She also serves as a member of the board for the West Bloomington Revitalization Project, raises a son and a daughter, and has helped her husband create a website for his beekeeping business.
For the last three years, Emily has served as the chairperson of the McLean County Bar Association’s CLE committee. Behind the scenes, Emily works to make sure every bar association CLE happens. To those of you reporting your CLE this year, just look at how many MCBA credits you have, and then thank Emily for helping to make that happen.
One of Emily’s nominators, in describing the sheer amount of work that Emily does, wrote that she had “no idea when Emily sleeps.” In 2012, after presenting Emily with the community service scholarship, Rusty DePew came up to the presenter and said “with all Emily does, when is it that she sleeps?” Eight years of selfless dedication to her community has earned Emily the 2020 McLean County Bar Association’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award. As Illinois proceeds into Phase 4 of Restore Illinois this week, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide a reminder to the Realtor community of our procedures with closings. All five local title companies agree that it remains in the best interest of all involved to keep closings limited to those individuals that are required to sign documents and their legal representatives. We will continue to be available for Realtors to drop off items for closings, but request that Realtors do not attend closings until notice has been given that we are welcoming additional guests.
Arrangements have been made with each office for the delivery of commission checks, either via overnight delivery, hand delivery by the title company, or a designated representative from the brokerage who comes and picks them up. If you have questions regarding a specific transaction, please contact the title company directly.

Helping lawyers and their families through uncertain times
Helping attorneys through the toughest times of their lives has been at the core of what we at the Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF) have done since 1951. Today, we recognize that the COVID-19 crisis has presented all of us with a new set of unforeseen, unpredictable challenges. With limited court access and futures uncertain for many, the IBF has established the COVID-19 Lawyers Care Relief Fund as an extension of our existing Warren Lupel Lawyers Care Fund. This initiative will enable us to further our reach to even more attorneys in need throughout the state and will specifically provide financial aid to attorneys struggling to make ends meet as a result of this crisis. This special relief fund has been made possible by a generous cy pres award directed to the IBF by our friends at Edelson PC.
The IBF COVID-19 Lawyers Care Relief Fund will provide one-time, non-renewable lump sum payments of $2,000 to attorneys facing financial hardship related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attorneys must be based in Illinois and in good standing with the ARDC to be eligible for a grant. Applications will be accepted and reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis through July 15. Please be assured that all information provided in the application process, as well as the identity of all applicants and recipients, will remain confidential.
Almost 70 years of providing aid to attorneys in crisis has proven time and time again how generous our profession is, and how committed attorneys from all walks of life and all parts of the state are to helping our own. If you know a colleague who is struggling, please share our application and let them know the IBF and our supporters are here for them. If you are in a position to contribute and looking for a way to help those less fortunate, please consider making a donation of any amount to the IBF COVID-19 Lawyers Care Relief Fund.

Illinois Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal clinic where low-income Illinoisans can submit a question online to ask a lawyer for help with a civil legal issue. Volunteer lawyers then log onto the site at their convenience and answer questions waiting in the queue that they feel comfortable addressing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a great way to help those in need from the comfort and safety of your home.

A project of the American Bar Association, Free Legal Answers was created as a national platform to increase access to advice and information about non-criminal legal matters for those who cannot afford legal assistance. It is now active in 42 jurisdictions within the United States, including Illinois, with the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) as the statewide administrator. Most clients’ questions tend to be in one of the big three civil legal aid categories—family, housing and consumer law. However, since the pandemic and resulting shutdown, now people are also asking about employment and benefits issues. PILI provides the necessary support, including an online resource page with training videos and sample questions and answers. The ABA provides malpractice coverage for volunteer lawyers.
