for the most current 11th circuit judicial updates

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I hope you all enjoyed our beautiful weekend weather.

While we return to a state of normalcy for our state and community, I hope and yearn for calm, peace and understanding during these trying times given the events of this past week. As always, we should value one another and strive to treat each other with great respect.

Good luck on your resumption of normal work affairs. A big shout out and thanks to Chief Judge Fellheimer and our other judges, along with Mary Sellmyer and Will Scanlon, for putting together our presentations this last week for 'State of the Circuit, Part Deux' and the outlook and protocol for SC, AR and L cases, at least for the Summer months. We had a great turnout for both presentations this past Tuesday and Wednesday, especially coming off the long weekend. If you were unable to "attend" the update on State of the Circuit, do not fret as the program was recorded and able to viewed at your leisure, at least for the next while. See the link below. Thanks again to our Bench for their willingness to provide us some insight of the lay of things in the courthouse operations and the anticipated handling of our caseload.

In place of our Annual meeting on Tuesday, June 16th, please look to sign up for a CLE presentation on 'Managing IT Risk While Sheltering in Place: Cybersecurity Awareness & Protecting Sensitive Information.' Let us hope that 2020 will be the last time for the need of sheltering in, but information on IT security is always welcome. Hope you enjoy the program. It is another CLE opportunity, which may be needed for those of us with an MCLE reporting period of June 30, 2020. And, DO NOT FORGET to take advantage of securing a three-month extension (until September 30, 2020), if you need it, to earn your MCLE credits and report compliance to the MCLE Board. Again, the extension is not automatic, but can be obtain at no cost by submitting an online report of "Not Yet Complied" to the MCLE Board no later than July 31, 2020.

With the input from our History Committee, I have decided to move the Bar's Annual meeting from Tuesday, June 16th, to the month of July. I would hope for an in-person gathering and our ability to present the resolutions for those from our MCBA family that had passed away during the year. Stay tuned for the details. Thank you for your patience.

My best to everyone and Have a great week.
Joe Foley

Information about a Virtual Pro Bono Opportunity to Help Those in Need
Illinois Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal clinic where low-income Illinoisans can submit a question online to ask a lawyer for help with a civil legal issue. Volunteer lawyers then log onto the site at their convenience and answer questions waiting in the queue that they feel comfortable addressing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this is a great way to help those in need from the comfort and safety of your home.

A project of the American Bar Association, Free Legal Answers was created as a national platform to increase access to advice and information about non-criminal legal matters for those who cannot afford legal assistance. It is now active in 42 jurisdictions within the United States, including Illinois, with the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) as the statewide administrator. Most clients’ questions tend to be in one of the big three civil legal aid categories—family, housing and consumer law. However, since the pandemic and resulting shutdown, now people are also asking about employment and benefits issues. PILI provides the necessary support, including an online resource page with training videos and sample questions and answers. The ABA provides malpractice coverage for volunteer lawyers. You can learn more by clicking on the Free Legal Answers Logo below or visit the site to register at this LINK.
