MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTGood morning, I hope you enjoyed the wonderful weekend weather and that you are all addressing those blasted home projects which you have been putting off ! We had received notes of great appreciation from Advocate BroMenn and OSF St. Joseph Medical Center for our meal donations. I am sure that you would agree that their "Thank you's" were very nice, but unnecessary. It is all of us that greatly appreciate everything they are doing for the people of our community. Please continue to keep all of our healthcare, first responders and other frontline workers in your thoughts. This week, you can be a part of a Zoom conference to learn more about what we can do for others in our community. Specifically, the United Way has partnered with a number of local organizations, including the McLean County Chamber of Commerce and our own Nathan Hinch is the current board chair, in an effort called “Feeding BN” to help provide assistance to local food banks and connecting resources to those in need. See this LINK. To help spread the word about the good work United Way is doing in this area and securing an opportunity for support, Adrian Barr and Nathan Hinch are inviting you to attend a short Zoom meeting this Wednesday May 6th, over the noon hour. To attend, please RSVP to Adrian [ [email protected] ] or Nathan [ [email protected] ], in order for a Zoom link to be sent to you. I hope you can join the conference. Looking ahead, with the Governor's extension of the shelter-in-place to the end of May despite a few legal attacks on its viability, our CLE Committee is diligently working to bring you the monthly CLEs via Zoom for the time being. This month, Judges McFarland and Costigan will be presenting on their Specialty Courts-Recovery and Drug Courts on Tuesday, May 19th. Registration is open below. Please note that I had reached out to Judges Fellheimer, Bauknecht, Fitton, Feeney and others to see if our Bench would be willing to present another quasi-State of the Circuit, via Zoom, on how matters will be handled when we get up and running on the way to normal operations, including the expected procedures throughout the circuit, conducting of hearings and trials, if any, over the coming months, etc. And, if possible, how movements within the courthouses will be handled with people using elevators or gathering in the hallways, courtrooms, and clerk's offices, etc. If we can put together such a program, we would look to presenting it on Wednesday, May 27th, and if you are unable to attend, we would hope to have it recorded for your viewing at a later date. Stay tuned for further details. And, we will are still in a holding pattern for the Bar's Annual meeting, currently scheduled for Tuesday, June 16th. Once again, there is the potential for it to be rescheduled beyond that date a maximum of 30 days. We hope to know more soon. Have a great week. Be safe! Best regards, Joe Foley The JOY CARE CENTER in Bloomington-Normal was a charity supported by the late Judge Ronald Dozier. It accepts used suits, sport coats, pant suits, etc., for use in more formal settings. With the blessing of Jackie Dozier, after the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, I will be sponsoring an outdoor gathering at my restored native area property in Southwest Bloomington, which will provide less exposure than an indoor venue. The only entry requirement will be a donation to the JOY CARE CENTER. The extra time at home would be a great time to go through your closets and decide what clothing items you are no longer wearing to court or to the office and set them aside for a donation.
During this time of reduced hours, I have revised my own estate planning documents. I included this language “My suits, sport coats, ties and business clothing shall be donated to JOY CARE CENTER in McLean County, Illinois”. Some of the judges and other attorneys might facetiously ask who would want them? As a probate attorney, I’ll add that you’ll be doing your spouses a favor by directing them on how to start clearing out your closets when you pass away.
