On Monday, November 7, 2022, my wife Christine and I returned home from our early morning cardio workout at the gym at about 6:00AM. I complained of being exhausted and I lied upon our living room floor, as was my habit. Christine then noticed I was unresponsive and unconscious. I wasn’t breathing, and my heart had stopped beating. At 53 years of age, I had suffered cardiac arrest and I died. Christine shouted to awaken out 18 year old son, Max, and as she called 9-1-1. The dispatcher contacted the Bloomington Fire Department and explained the steps of CPR to Christine. Max had been taught basic CPR at central Catholic High School, and Christine later told me he confidently and calmly stepped in and began CPR. Both Christine and Max performed CPR until the EMTs arrived. The firefighters performed CPR upon me as I lie on my living room floor for 50 (fifty) minutes using a mechanical chest compression device, and the firefighters shocked my heart with an AED 15 (fifteen) times. When they had restarted my heart beating, they transported me OSF St Joseph Medical Center. Christine immediately calling 9-1-1 and Max and Christine performing CPR saved my life. I learned for every minute that passes without CPR, the potential survival for a person in cardiac arrest is reduced by 10%. Please remember that fact. For every minute of inaction, 10% of possible survival is lost. I was extremely fortunate Christine was present when I suffered cardiac arrest, and that she acted quickly. I am so very proud for Christine and Max both having been awarded the Red Cross Lifesaver Award certificate for having performed CPR and saving my life. My cardiac arrest was a result of my genetics. My two main coronary arteries had become blocked 100%, as a result of a cholesterol issue passed down in my family. I had felt I was in the best shape I had ever been physically, before November 7 happened. I know I am Blessed. I was released from the hospital after one week. The doctors and nurses all call me a “miracle”, especially after the doctor had initially told Christine I would likely not survive, or, if I did survive, I would need to live in an assisted living facility for the remainder of my life due to the effects of the lack of oxygen supply to my brain would have on my cognitive and physical abilities. I returned to work as a McLean County prosecutor in mid-January 2023. Miraculously, I had no impairment to my cognitive or physical abilities. I survived cardiac arrest because people stepped in and performed CPR. The more people who learn this life-saving skill, the more people’s lives can be saved. Thank you for allowing me to share my story. Aaron Who?: Everyone is welcome! - Let's pack the house!
