COVID-19 updates for the 11th circuit
4-20-2020 from Supreme Court of IL Attorneys with June 30, 2020 MCLE Compiance Deadline...

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Good morning, All. Hope you are all staying safe, healthy and positive!!

We had a great turnout last Tuesday for our first ever Zoom CLE presentation on 'Who's Bias, The truth About Implicit Bias', courtesy of the Underwood Committee. I could only attend by telephone, but it sounded like there was great participation on our part. Thank you for trying something new. With the Governor's recent directive and my sense of the national fervor, our CLEs may need to be presented via Zoom for the indefinite future. The CLE committee is busy scheduling a Tuesday, May 19th CLE 'Recovery and Drug Courts'. The registration for that Zoom meeting will begin next week. I would anticipate that Retired Judge David Butler's presentation on Collections will be presented, via Zoom, on Tuesday, July 21st.

At this time, we will are still in a holding pattern for the Bar's Annual meeting, currently scheduled for Tuesday, June 16th. There is the potential for it to be moved out a maximum of 30 days. We should know more within the next few weeks.

On a positive note and with the help of my kids, we had delivered boxed lunches/meals to our wonderful healthcare workers at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center and additional meals for the night shift at Advocate BroMenn. The representative for Advocate BroMenn informed me that it was wonderful to see the smiles and shocked looked on the faces of its workers when presented with their meals! We plan to make an additional meal donation for the night shift at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center this week. Please see the Thank You note we received below. Once again, please continue to keep all of our front line workers and first responders in your thoughts.

Lastly, this is the last week for nominations for The Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. The deadline is this Thursday, April 30 and the link is below.

Continue to Be well and Be safe.
Best regards,
Joe Foley

a thank you

'Your kindness has overwhelmed our staff. Thank you for donating meals to our employees during the COVID-19 Pandemic!          Your generosity was greatly appreciated.'

God Bless - Lynn   OSF HealthCare President - Lynn A. Fulton

The JOY CARE CENTER in Bloomington-Normal was a charity supported by the late Judge Ronald Dozier. It accepts used suits, sport coats, pant suits, etc., for use in more formal settings. With the blessing of Jackie Dozier, after the COVID-19 restrictions are lifted, I will be sponsoring an outdoor gathering at my restored native area property in Southwest Bloomington, which will provide less exposure than an indoor venue. The only entry requirement will be a donation to the JOY CARE CENTER. The extra time at home would be a great time to go through your closets and decide what clothing items you are no longer wearing to court or to the office and set them aside for a donation.

During this time of reduced hours, I have revised my own estate planning documents. I included this language “My suits, sport coats, ties and business clothing shall be donated to JOY CARE CENTER in McLean County, Illinois”. Some of the judges and other attorneys might facetiously ask who would want them? As a probate attorney, I’ll add that you’ll be doing your spouses a favor by directing them on how to start clearing out your closets when you pass away.

Help The Immigration Project help others become Citizens!

McLean County Immigrant Resource Guide LINK

Over the last ten years, Immigration Project has helped over 500 Lawful Permanent Residents to naturalize-be sworn in as U.S. citizenship! We would love your assistance in conducting legal eligibility screenings and in completing appropriate USCIS forms. We will provide training. Spanish is not required, though helpful for about a quarter of the cases and if necessary we can provide interpreters.

In-house clinics are held on a Thursday or Friday, with legal screenings in the morning, followed by a different team of form-fillers. We really need help with the legal screenings 9am-1pm, but would also love help with form-filling if you wish.  (Our next Normal Citizenship Clinics is scheduled for May 15th, but subject to change due to COVID-19.)

We normally have quarterly, Saturday workshops in Monmouth, Springfield, Kankakee, and Normal.  Our Monmouth June 6th workshop is still on the schedule.  If interested in dedicating your Saturday and/or doing some direct representation on other types of cases, please contact Danielle DeWinter ddewinter@immigrationproject.org .
