COURT NOTES
To stay ahead of the many issues facing the court system, many local Judges have been recruited to serve on State-wide Committees/Task Forces to address a myriad of local and state-wide issues and include the following: (1) Judge Costigan and Will Scanlon, our Trial Court Administrator, are members of the Pre-Trial Services/Bond Reform Task Force studying the implementation of the various aspects of the Bond Reform legislation that takes effect January 1, 2023. Expect a lot of information in the coming months regarding Pre-Trial Services and Bond Reform as we prepare for January 1, 2023. (2) Judge McFarland is a member of the Supreme Court Task Force studying remote hearings post-pandemic. The Supreme Court has made it known that remote hearings are here to stay, and it will be fine-tuning the rules and regulations governing remote hearings that were quickly put together at the beginning of the pandemic. (3) Lastly, I serve on a newly created Supreme Court Committee studying courthouse closures, more specifically, issues surrounding the closing of a courthouse for weather or natural disasters while still allowing for remote hearings to take place during the closure. Concerns include Statute of Limitations filing issues, proper messaging to the public regarding what a physical closure means, personnel and staffing issues when a courthouse is physically closed and many more. These were issues we faced with the two most recent winter storms that closed the Law and Justice Center that did not exist prior to remote hearings being readily available. We look forward to sharing more information on these and other court-related matters with you as soon as we receive it. Please join us this Wednesday, April 20 for the Bench/Bar Listening Session. The registration is listed below. As always, should you have any questions or concerns on court operations, please contact Trial Court Administrator William Scanlon at (309) 888-5266. Best regards.
