MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Well, we definitely sprung forward into some very nice weather. Let us hope that it continues and we do not have snowfall into April like last year. Thank you for your patience without a newsletter last week as Mary Sellmyer was away. And, thanks to everyone for checking in each week.

We have another slow week. But, please register now for next week's CLE Bar Luncheon on Tuesday, March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. The program will address Collections: Obtaining and Collecting Judgments in Debt Collection Actions: Representing both Plaintiffs and Defendants. Judge David Butler (Ret.) will lead a one or two hour informational session. The registration link is below. (And, do not forget to Vote next Tuesday as well!)

The Bar will be hosting our own St. Patty's Day, albeit delayed, next Thursday, March 19th. Bring out the Green at Reality On Monroe (111 East Monroe) in downtown Bloomington, beginning at 4:30 pm. There is more information about this event below.

Please note that The Outstanding Young Lawyer Award is now open for nominations. Please see more information below. And, see the links below if interested in volunteering for two very worthy causes for our Bar and community as a whole: Illinois Lawyer’s Assistance Program (LAP) and/or The Immigration Project.

SAVE THE DATE: **LAW DAY 2020**
When : Evening of Friday, May 8th.
Where: Bloomington Country Club.
Theme: "Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100".
Things are coming together to make this time a wonderful evening. Please keep checking the weekly newsletter and MCBA website for more specific details.

We are still working on the potential for our Bar members to provide assistance to our local Habitat for Humanity. We have been offered a rematch with Champaign County's Bar on the softball field. I was unable to play last year, so I am particularly excited about another chance to play our colleagues from the East.

Last, but not least, this is your friendly reminder to register/re-register for membership to the MCBA. See link below.

Have a great week!
Joe Foley

Obtaining and Collecting Judgments in Debt Collection Actions:
Representing both Plaintiffs and Defendants

[up to 2 hours general cle credit approved]

Please join the McLean County Bar Association in welcoming Judge David Butler (Ret.). This two-hour program will focus on various aspects of pursuing or defending a collection action.  The first hour of the program will address filing a collection suit and obtaining a judgment.  Common procedural issues will be explored as well as some specific causes of action such as credit card debt, medical bills and services, promissory notes, and home repairs.  This course will provide a brief survey some statutes that relate to collections actions
The second hour of the CLE program will concentrate on collection of judgments.  Specific collection mechanisms will be examined such as wage deductions, non-wage garnishment, Citations To Discover Assets, Installment Payment Orders, and revival of judgments.

AmeriCorps Week, March 8-14, 2020 is a celebration of all things AmeriCorps – from the programs and organizations that make this national service initiative possible in communities across the country to the members, like me, who have pledged to “Get Things Done” since the program’s inception in 1994.
I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kiasha Henry, and I am the JusticeCorps fellow in the law library. I recently retired from the United States Post Office after 20 years. I am currently enrolled in a Paralegal AAB program and will complete it in August 2020. What attracted me to AmeriCorps was the ability to be a servant to my community. JusticeCorps provides a wonderful opportunity to not only serve but empower patrons by helping them navigate and gain confidence the legal process.
The law library has served 1,348 court patrons in McLean County since August 2019. Not only have I worked in the law library, but have been fortunate to assist with Foreclosure Pre-Mediations. I will be obtaining my Mediation Skills Training in April 2020 from the Center for Conflict Resolution, and from there I will seek my Divorce Mediation Training. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities that AmeriCorps and JusticeCorps have provided for me. So please visit www.nationalservice.gov, and explore all the wonderful things AmeriCorps is doing across the country to “Get Things Done”.

Help The Immigration Project help others become Citizens!

Over the last ten years, Immigration Project has helped over 500 Lawful Permanent Residents to naturalize-be sworn in as U.S. citizenship! We would love your assistance in conducting legal eligibility screenings and in completing appropriate USCIS forms!  We provide training. Spanish is not required, though helpful for about a quarter of the cases and if necessary we can provide interpreters.

In-house clinics are held on a Thursday or Friday, with legal screenings in the morning, followed by a different team of form-fillers. We really need help with the legal screenings 9am-1pm, but would also love help with form-filling if you wish. The next two dates for in-house Normal Citizenship Clinics are April 24 and May 15.

Our quarterly Saturday workshops are in Monmouth (3/yr), Springfield (2/yr), Kankakee (2/yr), and Normal.  If interested in dedicating your Saturday and/or doing some direct representation on other types of cases, please contact Danielle DeWinter (ddewinter@immigrationproject.org).
