MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Thank you to Ms. Garner and Judge Feeney for your presentation on Veteran’s Affairs and Veteran’s Court. It was very informative and definitely a worthy cause being addressed by those folks involved with that venture.

This is a slow week for the Bar and I am out of state. There will be no weekly newsletter next week as Mary Sellmyer will be out of the office. Congrats to our Trivia winners at JP’s Wheel and Ale House — Nargis Khokhar, Rachel Brandt, Katy Kraft, Maggie Butzen and others. Our Bar teams took first and second place. Thanks to all those who participated.

Please see the links below if interested in volunteering your time and assistance with Illinois Lawyer’s Assistance Program (LAP) and/or The Immigration Project. The two organizations addressing very worthwhile areas in need in our legal community.

SAVE THE DATE: **LAW DAY 2020** When : Evening of Friday, May 8th. Where: Bloomington Country Club. Theme: "Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100". The planning of this event has been underway and should be a wonderful celebration. More details coming.

Stay tuned for specifics of the potential for our Bar to provide our assistance to Habitat for Humanity.

The Outstanding Young Lawyer Award is now open for nominations. Please see more information below.

The March 17 CLE Luncheon will address Collections:
Obtaining and Collecting Judgments in Debt Collection Actions: Representing both Plaintiffs and Defendants. Judge David Butler (Ret.) will lead a one or two hour informational session on this topic. The registration is now open below.

Lastly, this is your friendly reminder to register/re-register for your membership to the MCBA. See link below.

Have a great week!

Obtaining and Collecting Judgments in Debt Collection Actions:
Representing both Plaintiffs and Defendants

[up to 2 hours general cle credit pending approved]

Please join the McLean County Bar Association in welcoming Judge David Butler (Ret.). This two-hour program will focus on various aspects of pursuing or defending a collection action.  The first hour of the program will address filing a collection suit and obtaining a judgment.  Common procedural issues will be explored as well as some specific causes of action such as credit card debt, medical bills and services, promissory notes, and home repairs.  This course will provide a brief survey some statutes that relate to collections actions
The second hour of the CLE program will concentrate on collection of judgments.  Specific collection mechanisms will be examined such as wage deductions, non-wage garnishment, Citations To Discover Assets, Installment Payment Orders, and revival of judgments.

Help The Immigration Project help others become Citizens!

Over the last ten years, Immigration Project has helped over 500 Lawful Permanent Residents to naturalize-be sworn in as U.S. citizenship! We would love your assistance in conducting legal eligibility screenings and in completing appropriate USCIS forms!  We provide training. Spanish is not required, though helpful for about a quarter of the cases and if necessary we can provide interpreters.

In-house clinics are held on a Thursday or Friday, with legal screenings in the morning, followed by a different team of form-fillers. We really need help with the legal screenings 9am-1pm, but would also love help with form-filling if you wish. The next two dates for in-house Normal Citizenship Clinics are April 24 and May 15.

Our quarterly Saturday workshops are in Monmouth (3/yr), Springfield (2/yr), Kankakee (2/yr), and Normal.  If interested in dedicating your Saturday and/or doing some direct representation on other types of cases, please contact Danielle DeWinter ([email protected]).
