MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I hope that everyone had a wonderful weekend and am looking forward to Thanksgiving Day festivities next week. This past week, our social gathering was Merlot & A Masterpiece. I haven't heard whether any of our members have given up their day jobs to become artists, but you can be the judge, see pics below !

Tomorrow, November 19, is our CLE luncheon with a program on the Opioid epidemic and updates. There is still room so please the link for sign up.

We had received wonderful news and I wanted to give a big shout out to Prairie State Legal Services and members of our MCBA. Recently, Prairie State received a donation of $10,623.21 from the Jaycees for our participation at Bruegala! I am sure that you will agree this money is going to be used for worthwhile causes as indicated below. THANK YOU to all of those who sponsored or volunteered. You make us proud!

In that same spirit of "giving", you are all invited to help Prairie State Legal on the upcoming #GivingTuesday, which is Tuesday, December 3rd. On that date, there will be several matching challenges, which will potentially double (or triple!) your money by making a donation. Please see below for more details. I so appreciate any of your anticipated assistance with this cause.

Finally, looking ahead to our Christmas luncheon on Tuesday, December 17. Registration will open soon. Friday, December 20 at 2.00 pm provides an opportunity to give and carol at the McLean County Nursing Home. There are still a few resident available for adoption in our Project Santa 2019. We would love to continue show off the MCBA giving and the holiday spirit. Please sign up below and/or bring your voices for our caroling!

Have a great week !
Joe Foley

November Opioid Program
Update

We are looking forward to a great panel discussion consisting of McLean County Coroner Kathy Yoder, Sheriff Jon Sandage, and State’s Attorney Don Knapp, and Circuit Judge Hon. Casey Costigan, as they update the bar on the status of the opioid epidemic in McLean County and updates since our program on this topic two years ago.

As noted in previous MCBA newsletters, with our professionalism CLE programs, we always try to apply to the IL Supreme Court MCLE Board for preapproval in advance, but cannot guarantee approval obviously until we hear back from them. In this case we applied for professionalism CLE credit preapproval, specifically in the “mental health and substance abuse” category. We have now been informed by the MCLE Board that, while the program is approved for professionalism credit, they do not believe it sufficiently speaks to “mental health and substance abuse” BY ATTORNEYS and so it is not approved for that particular classification at this time.

Upon consideration, we believe the program as planned is important and of benefit to the bar regardless of that classification, and so we are proceeding as scheduled. Please note that the CLE Committee and Underwood Committees are discussing a possible future program, perhaps in conjunction with the Lawyers Assistance Program (LAP), to more specifically speak to mental health and substance abuse among attorneys, and to meet that CLE requirement.

Prairie State Legal Services received a donation of $10,623.21 for our participation at Bruegala! This money will be used to help victims of domestic violence and to help people remove barriers to work through expungement and sealing. Thank you to all of those who sponsored or volunteered at Bruegala. We had a fantastic turnout by MCBA members and other supporters from the community. The Bloomington-Normal Jaycees commented how impressed they are with Prairie State's volunteers. It was a great showing by the local legal community.
Your support helped Prairie State Legal Services receive the largest share of the proceeds from Bruegala.
    Thank you so much!
