MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Well, it appears that Fall is finally here with the changing of the weather.

Reminder: TODAY, for the funeral service for Mr. H. Wayne Carmichael, members will congregate a few minutes prior to the 10:00 am service at Eastview Christian Church.

This week and next, there are several CLE opportunities. This Thursday, October 10th at 4:00 pm, the Family Law Committee will be presenting a FREE CLE on Individual and Family Tax Law Update in Judge McFarland's Courtroom, 4th Floor at the L&J Center. Next Monday, October 14th, from noon to 2:00 pm, there is a presentation on Expungements, with an opportunity to obtain up to 2 hours of CLE, in the Jury Assembly Room on the 5th floor of the L&J Center. Lunch is included! And, next Tuesday, October 15th, our monthly CLE luncheon will be presenting a program centered around Real Estate in Divorce. Please see the links below for more information on these upcoming CLEs.

This week also, Michelle Mancias and Fred Moore are members of the Orpheus Mandolin Orchestra, and their group is hosting the national convention of the Classical Mandolin Society of America this month at the Marriott in Uptown Normal. The concerts will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Once again, Bob White, a Mock Trial coach for Normal West, has two very talented seniors who have an opportunity to attend a Mock Trial seminar this month at Harvard University. The families are hoping to defray some of the costs for airfare and registration for the program (chaperones are paying their own way). If you have an interest in helping these young students, please reach out to Bob or contact Mary Sellmyer for more information.

Lastly, there are three weeks left for second and third year Law students to submit an application for the annual MCBA scholarship. Please share this information with qualifying students. The  deadline is October 31st. Please see the application LINK.

Have a great week !
Joe Foley

mock trial program

For the past 23 years, Normal Community West High School has been active in Mock Trial through the Illinois State Bar Association's Mock Trial program. In more recent years, we have had the good fortune of the partnership with the McLean County Bar Association in hosting an annual competition in March at the McLean County Law and Justice Center that continues to attract more and more teams from across Illinois. There are significant hurdles for us to compete at the level that many other teams...          Please click on the LINK to read more.

up to 2 HOURs OF GENERAL CLE CREDIT [approved]

The McLean County Bar Association cordially invites you to attend a presentation about expunging and sealing criminal records in McLean County. Adrian Barr of Prairie State Legal Services will present. The presentation will address the recent changes to the Criminal Identification Act, how to determine if criminal records are eligible for expungement or sealing, completion of the Illinois Supreme Court standardized forms, filing the request with the McLean County Circuit Clerk, and the court procedure after a request is filed. The presentation will also address how the new Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act (effective January 1, 2020) expands expungement eligibility for people with eligible cannabis related arrests, charges, or convictions.

Beginning in 2017, there have been dramatic changes to the Criminal Identification Act. Expungement and sealing relief is now available to many more people. In 2018, Prairie State Legal Services started a volunteer driven program to help people expunge or seal their old criminal records. Since that time Prairie State Legal Services and its volunteers have helped 67 people expunge or seal 244 criminal records in McLean County.
