consumer Issues

Please see an article [button below] about numerous scams and what your clients should do when they have been victimized. As you're probably aware, there's not much an attorney can do with most of the telephone/internet scams. Detective Bryan Hanner of the McLean County Sheriff's Department was very helpful for one of my Public Guardian cases recently. 

I will be dropping off the National Consumer Law Center Consumer Warranty Manual, 5th Edition, in the old law library on the 6th floor of the Law and Justice Center when possible. It is a great resource for researching Consumer Warranty issues including the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the UCC. It has some sample pleadings and discovery. I have the updated edition and internet access to further updates if any attorneys are handling a case in this area.

illinois supreme court appoints carla barnes as at-large judge in 11th judicial circuit

February 11, 2021 swearing in ceremony is planned.

​January 12, 2021

Justice Rita B. Garman and the Supreme Court of Illinois have announced the appointment of Carla E. Barnes as an At-Large Circuit Court Judge in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit. Ms. Barnes will be the first African-American judge in the Eleventh Circuit.

Please join us on Thursday, February 11, 2021, for Learn@Lunch with our featured speaker, Attorney Thomas McClure. Professor McClure will present an overview of Illinois Eviction Law and he will explain how a landlord can terminate a lease. He will present the common defenses to eviction and will introduce standardized eviction forms. His presentation has been updated to include current rules and regulations pertaining to the Covid-19 pandemic. This presentation is eligible for one hour of paralegal CLE.
 
Thomas McClure is the Director of Legal Studies and an associate professor of Politics and Government at Illinois State University. Prior to entering academia as a full-time professor, he served as a judicial law clerk for the Illinois Appellate Court for two years and engaged in the private practice of law for 26 years. He has earned the top Martindale Hubbell rating of AV and has been recognized as an Illinois Super Lawyer six times.  He is the co-author of Fundamentals of Criminal Practice, a paralegal education textbook, as well as book chapters and articles published in peer-reviewed journals. As an educator, he has won several teaching awards as well as being recognized multiple times for having made an impact on his students.
