aba announced the illinois supreme court commission on professionalism to receive awardThe American Bar Association has announced that the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism will be one of two to receive a 2024 Honorable William D. Missouri Civility Award at the ABA’s Annual Meeting on July 31. The Commission on Professionalism is chaired by McClean County Bar member John Kim.
The award honors those who “exhibit exceptional qualities of civility, courtesy, and professionalism toward colleagues, litigants, and the public,” according to the ABA. You can find more information on the award and the Commission in the press release: https://www.2civility.org/illinois-supreme-court-commission-on-professionalism-to-receive-aba-civility-award/. “This award is a result of the foresight of the Illinois Supreme Court, which set ambitious professionalism goals for the lawyers and judges of our state, as well as the enthusiasm of our dedicated Commissioners and talented staff,” said John Kim, Chair of the Commission on Professionalism. “I would also like to recognize the community of lawyers, judges, law schools, legal organizations, and sister organizations of the court who have collaborated with us to advance professionalism across the state. Many civil lawsuits are won or lost without a trial. This CLE program presents an in-depth examination of pre-trial motion practice. Some critical aspects of pre-trial Motions To Dismiss and Motions For Summary Judgment will be discussed. Please join the McLean County Bar Association in welcoming Judge Butler (Ret.) and Logan County Judge Funk. This one-hour program will survey some of the most important rules of ethics that every attorney should know and the possible consequences of violating these rules. Judge Thomas Funk and Retired Judge David Butler will identify and explain rules of ethics found in the Illinois Code of Professional Conduct. Topics will include: safekeeping of client’s property (trust accounts), duty to report professional misconduct of other attorneys (In re Himmel), dealing with unrepresented persons, confidentiality of information, meritorious claim or contentions, communication with person represented by counsel, firm names and letterhead, attorneys fees, client-lawyer sexual relationships, and ex parte communications with judges.
