How can we improve this event? - This is what we heard from you.

One of my personal favorites is McLean County for a variety of reasons. Perhaps have teams bring b teams in case of no-shows. I just ran the skokie tourney last night, and had one no show, and it worked out seamlessly. Just in cases? Maine South, and Normal West brought b teams that were not needed and they knew it in advance. Trial by fire from my experience!
Thank you so much for having us! Theresa students really enjoyed the experience. We found the competition to be well-run and organized! The volunteer judges and jurors were excellent. The only thing the kids would like is more feedback. I thought it was top notch! Hope to see you again next year.
First of all, thank you very much for everything you all did yesterday. We always look forward to this tournament, and the kids love the opportunity to compete in real courtrooms and get great feedback from practicing judges and attorneys. One thing our coaches and students were a little confused by yesterday was the scoring. It seems a bit problematic to have composite scores for ballots that favor the number of times and the number of scoring judges instead of averaging scores. For example, it appeared as though a same six school students participated in all three trials. We competed against a same team on both sides. So, if this is the case, then the scoring seems a bit odd and confusing. It also seemed like the number of evaluators in each room contributed to different max scores that students could receive. This format seemingly gives only the teams that make finals an opportunity to have individual awards as well. One suggestion would be to do a similar thing to the state tournament where a best witness (or best witnesses) and best attorney (or best attorneys) is chosen for each trial. This alleviates any discrepancies between scoring judges or the amount of judges in each trial. As well, ensuring that sides of teams only participate in one of the two rounds, so as not to receive additional scores or ballots, thus balancing scoring across all teams participating. Again, thank you very much for hosting, and we look forward to being back next year!
Thank you so much for having us. This was our first real tournament and the kids were so excited to be participating in it!
Was I supposed to pick up our feedback forms or do they get sent to us? The students are looking forward to hearing about their scores and areas of improvement. Thank you again!
Maybe we could involve extra students for runners and/or evaluators.
Thank you for all of your help! We love attending this competition because it is run so smoothly.
I think the one thing that comes to mind - and I don't know if it's possible with volunteer and time constraints - would be to somehow get the finals posted earlier, and let the teams that are not staying get an earlier start home and have the option of finding lunch in the area or on the road more easily without trying to get food (or students) into/out of the courthouse and back, just to leave at 2:00. Whatever teams are staying for the afternoon could deal with figuring out lunch and use the time to revisit whatever happened in the morning. I know there always are some disappointed coaches and students, and I have been among them sometimes. We've been fortunate to have stayed the last few years, but if we weren't it would be easier to handle to emotions of the students from the view of, "well, let's head home early and get some food on the way and process this," as opposed to having waited the couple of extra hours, and then just saying to them, "sorry, we're going home now."
We are grateful for all you do for our community.

Appellate Court to Hold Oral Argument at Illinois State
The Illinois Appellate Court for the Fourth Judicial District will hold oral argument at the Braden Auditorium in the Student Bone Center on the morning of April 17, 2024. This event is co-sponsored by the Department of Politics & Government and the McLean County Bar Association.
The Fourth District is based in Springfield. This judicial body considers appeals filed in trial courts from 41 counties including Rock Island, Winnebago, Sangamon, and McLean Counties. The court typically rules on over 5,000 cases per year.
This is the third time that the Fourth District held oral argument at Illinois State University. The first time was more than a decade ago, and the last time was spring 2023.
Students enrolled in the advanced legal research and writing class offered in the Legal Studies Program will be given assignments based on the case set for argument. Although the court has not announced which case it will hear at ISU, it is expected to be a criminal appeal.
