MCBA LAWSTUDENT             SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: As mentioned in the President’s letter, the McLean County Bar Association will be awarding a $1,000 community service scholarship for eligible second or third year law school students with strong ties to McLean County, Illinois.  To be considered, scholarship applications should be received electronically by October 15, 2010, and the recipient will be selected on or before November 15, 2010. A formal presentation will be made at noon on December 21, 2010, at our annual Bar Association holiday luncheon at Central Station in Bloomington, Illinois. Applicants for the MCBA law school scholarship should demonstrate a commitment to McLean County, Bloomington-Normal and/or its surrounding communities through residency in the county, through academic ties to local schools or through past or future employment. Prime candidates will express and demonstrate a commitment to legal aid work, pro bono activities and/or community service. Completed applications should be e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Box 3142, Bloomington, Illinois 61702   General CLE Credit: 3.25   Professor Richard Kaplan (University of Illinois, College of Law) developed one of the first law school courses on Elder Law, an emerging specialty dealing with the legal implications of extended life, and is the co-author of Elder Law in a Nutshell (4th ed. 2006). He has served as faculty advisor for the Elder Law Journal since its inception in 1992. He has also been recognized with the Outstanding Professor in the College of Law several times and has received the Campus Award for Excellence in Graduate and Professional Teaching at the University of Illinois.Professor Kaplan is a Fellow of the Employee Benefits Research Institute and a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance. He served on a 12-member panel on The Future of the Health Care Labor Force in a Graying Society, chaired by former U.S. Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin. In 2002, he was a delegate to the National Summit on Retirement Savings organized by the U.S. Department of Labor. He is also a member of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. He is a current member of the Supportive Care Coalition Board, and is co-chair of its Congress Planning Committee.
